Between stardom and suicide
Whether it is a Hollywood celebrity or another famous figure, the list of famous suicides goes to show fame does not always buy happiness. This incident brings us to the rise in high profile suicide cases. Is there a pattern?
Chester Bennington, the lead singer for Linkin Park, killed himself by hanging at the age of 41 in July, 2017.
Also, Lucy Gordon, the British actress who appeared in Spiderman 3 and Serendipity, was found dead in her Paris apartment. She left not one, but two suicide notes in her apartment before committing suicide. The actress hanged herself in the apartment she shared with her boyfriend, Jerome Alveras, while he was asleep.
The list is not limited to Hollywood celebrities as Swedish DJ and producer, Tim Bergling, popularly known as Avicii, killed himself recently. Ranked third on DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 DJs in 2012 and 2013 Avicii had been nominated twice for a Grammy Award, once for his work on Sunshine with David Guetta in 2012 and once for his song Levels in 2013. Reports claimed the producer took his own life, while a statement from his family said, “he could not go on any longer.”
Robin Williams was an American actor who starred in Jumanji and played the role of Mrs Doubtfire. On August 11, 2014, Williams died by suicide at his home in Paradise Cay, California.
In the initial report released on August 12, the coroner stated Williams had hanged himself; however, the final autopsy report released in November 2014 affirmed that Williams had committed suicide as initially described; neither alcohol nor illegal drugs were involved, while all prescription drugs present in his body were at “therapeutic” levels. The report also noted that Williams had been suffering a recent increase in paranoia.
Ordinarily, suicide should not seem as the way out for 19 years old Sawyer Sweeten, one of the youngest celebrities to go in such a way, but many believed his financial troubles got the best of him, as Sawyer shot himself in the head.
Fortunately, Nigeria’s high profile populace have not followed this trend save for Tunji Balogun popularly known as TeeBillz who attempted to take his life by jumping off Third Mainland Bridge.
