US service member killed in Afghanistan

An American service member died in combat in Afghanistan Monday, the U.S. military said.

“In accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete, the Pentagon said.

The incident was under investigation.

One other service member has died so far in 2019.

Army Ranger Sgt. Cameron Meddock, 26, of Spearman, Texas, died last week of wounds suffered in a Jan. 13 raid in Badghis Province. Meddock was on his second deployment in Afghanistan when he was killed.

The Pentagon has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan to assist the Afghan military in the fight against the Taliban and ISIS-affiliated groups.

As of Jan. 19, the Pentagon reports that 1,833 Americans have been killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom which began after the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001.
