A driver, Amusat Ashiru, has been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for defiling his daughter.
The 60-year-old was alleged to have raped his third daughter several times at their home on Efon Alaye Street, in the Akowonjo area of the state.
It was gathered that the Oyo State indigene had had two children with his first wife before putting the victim’s mother in a family way.
The child was said to have been living with her grandmother in Abeokuta, Ogun State, before the suspect brought her to Lagos in April.
He was alleged to have sexually abused her until she ran away from home.
The state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, who paraded the suspect at the command headquarters on Tuesday, said the 12-year-old met a woman on the road and begged her for shelter.
He said, “On June 24, 2018 around 9.40pm, the survivor begged a good Nigerian woman for a place to sleep. The woman asked her why she did not want to sleep in her family house and she told her that her father had been having sexual intercourse with her. The woman then reported to the police.
“Investigation into the case revealed that since the month of May 2018, the suspect had been having an incestuous relationship with his 12-year-old daughter. During interrogation, the suspect admitted that he committed the crime.”
The suspect told journalists that he did not know what came over him, saying he raped his daugther only once.
He said, “I cannot explain how it happened; the devil caused it.”
In a related development, another father, Adewale Ibitoye, was arrested for raping his 14-year-old daughter in the Ketu, Epe area of Lagos State.
According to the police, Ibitoye, after having sex with the daughter several times, forced her into marriage with a farmer, Moses Okrukpe.
“The cat was let out of the bag when the survivor became pregnant and was in labour for many days without being able to deliver the baby. She was taken to a trado-medical home where she confessed that her father had been having sex with her before he forced her into marriage with Moses Okurukpe, perhaps to cover his tracks. This is a case of child marriage, sexual abuse and exploitation of the highest order,” Imohimi said.
However, 55-year-old Adewale denied raping his daughter, saying she lied because he did not visit her at the medical centre where she was delivered of the baby.
He said, “After she was delivered of her baby, the doctor asked for a bill of N115,000 and insisted on complete payment. We left her at the hospital until the baby died.
“When nobody came for her, she was questioned on who slept with her and that was how she mentioned me. I never slept with her. She is my daughter. She lied against me because I did not go to see her at the hospital.”
